Worklife balance is a hot topic. It’s not plagiarism if I share where I am hearing this stuff! Last week I had the privilege of seeing Dan Thurman speak at the Marine Retailers Association of America (MRAA). While I won’t go into specifics and steal the thunder from his work… I will share the impact it has had on me. Balance is created.
My Own Mindset on Worklife Balance
Over the last fiscal quarter, my brain has been fixated on the benefits of playing the long game. Being consistent with content marketing, production of quality for clients, and regular exposure on other platforms should all add up over time to be an equitable brand.
The added complication for me and Mañana No Mas! is that although Mañana No Mas! is a direct extension of me… it is not me. This means that as I play this long game, I need to consider which aspects of my efforts contribute to a Corporate Brand versus a Personal Brand. This is a delicate exercise and takes “Balance”. Whoops, there’s that word again. Remember, balance is created.

Does Entrepreneurship Hamper Worklife Balance?
What I loved about Dan’s talk other than his inspiration of being a more fit in my older age, was the demonstration that balance is an action. It is something that takes constant tweaking and it may look different for different folks.
Worklife Balance isn’t about a specific formula of tasks. It’s not the hard line of nine to five for work, six to nine for family, and ten to six for sleep. It’s more of a nuance of evaluation, adjustment, measurement, tweak, repeat. Gone are the metrics that dictate a false sense of balance and the guilt that goes with a standard that isn’t getting met. Hello to a more flexible, forgiving example of balance that morphs as the environment changes and I can adjust.
This is a nuanced concept, but can have tremendous yields in both productivity and growth while also positively affecting the mental aspects of being a grown-up.
Seeing Balance in Others
This was all on my mind from last week… then I saw a young lady doing one of those balance bike expositions. Those ladies are tremendous. As I watched her and heard the commentary, it drove the concepts home that balance is a fluid concept and that while the output of proper balance is a visible thing… the inputs can vary to get similar results.
I am going to do my best in the future to avoid the phrase “find your balance” and replace it with “create some balance”. Balance is created.
