Andrew Seaman reached out asking for thoughts on the “Great Resignation”, as an idea of what it looks like for masses of people to be inspired to try something new. I for one am all for new opportunities.
As the last 18-months unfolded, I got to see first-hand the effects of our socio-economic, polical trends. I believe professionals are losing a sense of security that larger corporations could once provide. While this trend isn’t necessarily new, it is certainly amplified through our shared global experience of 2020/2021.
Entrepreneur is the logical step. However, if you are looking to spread your wings, there are some things that must occur to make the leap successfully.
* Self
* Community
* Good tools
* Patience and Stamina
Self – You need to invest in yourself. I personally believe that Physical Fitness leads to Fiscal Fitness and host courses to that effect. Take an open look at your own level of communication. Ask the tough questions of those around you. “Do I communicate well?” “Do I communicate clearly?”. Look at those you currently lead and ask if you could improve your leadership game.
Community – You can’t build anything awesome in your own silo. You need to stretch yourself and join some communities. Then, be a rebel and start one of your own. Test those leadership chops you’ve been working on. For me, I follow a couple of sales groups, marketing groups, leadership groups and participate in WordPress development groups to keep myself sharp and my network strong.
Good Tools – With “Community” comes “Communication”. How do you prefer to communicate and how does your network get the job done? For business, I love my LinkedIn connections and I also develop my own platforms online. I still rely on email quite a bit and have Calendly attached to drive and manage my meeting appointments. From there, you need to figure out your scope of communication: Blog, Podcast, Landing pages, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Telegram, TikTok – yes even TikTok.
Patience and Stamina – All the best ideas still take time to propagate. Lean on your community, and continue to invest in yourself while sowing the seeds of your plan and searching for the harvest. Hopefully, you establish some Key Performance Indicators to measure your progress and adjust accordingly.
All this gets to the end and says “What about the money?!?!” While you may hear “It takes money to make money”, I will be the first to tell you that if you hit the bullets above, you will need far less than you could imagine forging forward. Community is so big in this area. If I need something proofread, got it. If I need to run a plan by someone, got it. If I need a link shared, got it. By participating and added value to others – like writing this post on the spot – others are willing to fill the gaps for you.
Like Gary Vaynerchuck has said multiple times… not everything needs to be a million-dollar home run. 6 figures buys most their freedom.
