The Mental Strength of Athletes and Entrepreneurs

Competing in sports and running a business are both challenging endeavors that require a great deal of mental strength. Athletes must be able to focus and perform at their best even when they are injured, while entrepreneurs must be able to persevere in the face of setbacks and adversity.

There are many examples of athletes who have competed and performed well through injury. For example, Tom Brady tore his ACL in 2008, but he came back the following season to lead the New England Patriots to a Super Bowl victory. Similarly, Serena Williams suffered a pulmonary embolism in 2011, but she returned to the tennis court just a few months later and won her sixth Wimbledon title.

My sport was Motorcycle Roadracing. Throughout a season of practice and racing, crashing was a fact of life. The injury was no excuse to not compete. You have your fans and your sponsors to perform for… and you have the understanding that many of your competitors are also overcoming discomfort and injury.

The trade for the discomfort is the exhileration of holding onto a 200 horsepower, two-wheeled missile at over a 100MPH, through multiple corners while a whole field of racers is trying to squeeze you out and take the space themselves.

Challenges in Sport and Business

Entrepreneurs also face many challenges, and they must be able to draw on their mental strength to overcome them. For example, J.K. Rowling was rejected by 12 different publishers before her Harry Potter book was finally accepted. She could have easily given up, but she persevered and went on to become one of the most successful authors in history.

If we were to look at her situation in this odd battle with the “Alphabet Mafia”, you can easily see how her previous conditioning in overcoming obstacles is guiding her steadfast continuation of the message. She stated a truth about genetics, but elements of society demand a reclassification of truth to which she refused to abide. She is holding strong.

So, what are the benefits of competing in sports at a young age? There are many. First, sports can teach young people the importance of hard work and dedication. Second, sports can help young people develop the mental toughness they need to succeed in life. Third, sports can help young people build teamwork skills and learn how to work with others.

Sports also lend a sense of hierarchy that other sections of current society leave out. The idea of performing for a team, working with a team captain, and all of that taking leadership from a coach or team of coaches is something the pandemic nearly knocked out of existence.

It would be interesting to do a study to see how many of the people that opted out of the vaccination regimen during the pandemic were former athletes. I’ll save that for another post.

Business Casualties

In addition to the examples of athletes who have competed and performed well through injury, here are a couple of examples of business owners who have overcome hardship:

Oprah Winfrey
  • Oprah Winfrey was born into poverty and was sexually abused as a child. She overcame these challenges to become one of the most successful talk show hosts and media moguls in the world.
  • Steve Jobs was fired from his own company, Apple, in 1985. He returned to Apple in 1997 and helped to turn the company around, making it one of the most valuable companies in the world.

These are just a couple of examples of the many people who have overcome adversity to achieve great things. If you are facing a challenge in your life, remember that you are not alone. There are many people who have faced similar challenges and come out stronger. With hard work, dedication, and a positive attitude, you can overcome any obstacle.

In conclusion, competing in sports at a young age can provide many benefits, including:

  • Learning the importance of hard work and dedication
  • Developing mental toughness
  • Building teamwork skills
  • Learning how to work with others
